We constantly hear that sugary drinks, particularly soft drinks, are harmful to health since they cause obesity, increase the risk of diabetes, heart and kidney diseases, so the recommendation is to reduce their consumption or avoid them altogether.
However, to avoid drinking a normal soda, many people opt for the diet because it contains less sugar, but is it really good for your health?
The truth of diet soda
According to numerous investigations, the diet soda can cause the same damages as a normal one, since it causes the same diseases and it has even been indicated that it can cause dementia and cerebrovascular accidents.
To discover if this was true, researchers at Boston University collected information from 3,000 adults over 45 years old, where they found that those who consumed diet soda frequently did not have as much risk of dementia or stroke.
The results showed that only 5% of those studied developed dementia, while 3% had a stroke. The relationship between diseases and diet soda is not clear.
“At the end of the day, we are talking about a small number of people. I do not think people should be alarmed, “said Dr. Matthew Pase.
Other studies have revealed that this drink does influence the development of different conditions.
In 2012, it was found that those who drank a diet soda every day, had a 43% higher risk of suffering a heart attack, cerebrovascular or developing blood vessel problems.
In 2014, it was reported that those who were overweight or obese and consumed diet sodas, consumed between 90 and 200 calories more than those who chose a normal drink.
Likewise, it was indicated that it increased the risk of suffering type 2 diabetes by 12% per 12 ounces per day.
In that same year, other studies indicated that the cause could be the artificial sweeteners that stimulate the appetite and that provoke more desire to continue eating
The Dr. Christopher Gardner of the Center for Stanford Prevention Research indicates that sweeteners can deceive in compensation, causing food and eat more calories than usual.
It details that this happens for two reasons:
1.If you take a diet soda, you are more likely to eat something with more calories because you feel protected with the drink.
2.The sweet taste of the soft drink can prepare the brain for an increase in calories, in addition to affecting the taste buds, which results in choosing less healthy foods.
“If you drink a diet soda, that will not make up for the super fast food,” says nutritionist Angel Planells of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Seattle.
The researchers indicate that there is still much to investigate, but it is advisable to reduce their consumption or combine it with other healthy food options.
“We know that diet soda is better than sugary drinks in terms of body weight, but we do not know if it’s really good,” they conclude.
